The Pressure Point Framework is a supply chain diagnostic model that identifies four primary causes of operational disruption: space pressure, flow pressure, cost pressure and resilience pressure. John Brooks argues that the most expensive mistake in warehouse operations is solving the wrong problem with confidence, so the framework asks managers to name the pressure driving a disruption before committing to a fix. Warehouse infrastructure is typically sized for forecast volume rather than actual arrivals, which leaves it wrong in both directions when demand swings 30 to 40 percent in a quarter.

Sizing a permanent warehouse for the single busiest stretch of the year, which John Brooks calls building the church for Easter Sunday, leaves an expensive, underused asset for the rest of it. He argues manufacturers should keep a lean core network and add fractional capacity, such as storage trailers, only when a surge arrives, so warehouse space behaves like a variable utility instead of a fixed capital commitment. Fractional capacity also acts as a disruption buffer, absorbing inbound parts at the dock when a plant stops so the rest of the supply chain keeps moving.

When companies shift to just-in-case inventory to blunt tariffs, the extra stock has to be stored somewhere, and small warehouse space is scarce and expensive. John Brooks makes the case for rented storage trailers as temporary capacity: companies can buy ahead of a tariff change, hold the excess without signing a long-term lease, and release the trailers once conditions settle.
